Upstate Hidden Gem: Little Falls, NY

There are some towns in Upstate New York that I’ll go out of my way to visit for no other reason than to wander around aimlessly. Restaurants, shops – I could care less. I just want to soak in the town itself. The beautiful homes, the elegant municipal buildings, the ancient waterways, the random rusting water towers. That’s what living Upstate is all about – and Little Falls is a perfect example.

I’d probably passed the Little Falls exit on I-90 a million times in my life – ever since I was a kid going to visit my grandparents in Amsterdam. A couple years ago, on my way to visit my parents in Rochester, I decided to get off and have a look around. And this is what I found…

Are you kidding me?? Why didn’t anyone tell me Little Falls looked like this?! Look at that house!

This house literally made me park my car. I got out and started stalking the street like a paparazzi photographer. But I was shooting the buildings!

Here’s another angle of the same house…

That porch needs to stop. Seriously. I’m about to creep up on one of those wicker chairs and pop open an e-book.

Now look at this church.

Blam!! I’m a big stone church!! And I’m well-kept!

Wondering where you are? Check out this street sign. Yeah, we still got the original street signs. Curved ironwork and all.

Feel like reading a book? How about at this amazing library with the mansard roof and manicured lawn?

Or maybe you need a building permit to finish that studio in the carriage house? Come on down to City Hall where you’ll feel like Clark Kent in a three piece suit.

Or maybe you’re in an indie band, and the only rehearsal space you can afford is that weird little garage down by the canal.

Joy Division anyone?

And while you’re down by the canal, why not do a quick photo shoot in front of this perfectly rusted water tower.

Or maybe over here, in front of these massive locks.

Actually, why don’t we just go back to the apartment (aka. reclaimed mill house) overlooking the water, and watch the sun go down over the foothills of the Adirondacks?

Yeah, that sounds like the perfect idea.
