Bold expanses, distant mountains, rippling tributaries – welcome to Schoharie County, the meditative heart of New York State.
Sometimes you just need to go for a long drive – turn off the GPS and let yourself get lost in the old meandering country roads nestled in the heart of New York State. If you head towards The Catskills, and take enough left turns, you just might find yourself in Schoharie County.
Keep an eye out for Route 30, which starts near Gilboa Dam and the Schoharie Reservoir (stop by the Gilboa Museum and overlook to snap some incredible pictures, and check out the prehistoric fossil display dating back to when the region was positioned at the Equator. ??). Head north through the charming hamlet of Middleburgh, through the old Mohawk territory, up into the rolling foothills and pastures that stretch from Esperance to Amsterdam. Once you’re in Amsterdam, grab dinner at Bottisti’s and sop up some of the best red sauce in New York State. Pasta, pizza – you can’t go wrong. And if you love a good meatball, you’re in the right spot.
